전도서 1–4장은

해 아래 인생의 헛됨,

지혜와 수고의 한계,

때를 정하시는 하나님,

억압과 외로움 속에서 드러나는 인간 삶의 무게를 보여 줍니다.

1장은 모든 것이 헛되며,

해 아래 새 것이 없다고 말합니다.

인간은 많이 보아도 만족하지 못하고,

많이 들어도 채워지지 않습니다.

2장은 쾌락,

성취,

부,

수고,

지혜까지 시험하지만

그 모든 것이 죽음 앞에서 한계를 드러낸다고 말합니다.

3장은 범사에 기한이 있고

천하 만사가 다 때가 있음을 선포합니다.

인간은 모든 것을 다 붙들 수 없지만,

하나님은 모든 것을 때에 맞게 아름답게 하십니다.

4장은 억압받는 자의 눈물,

헛된 수고,

경쟁,

외로움,

함께함의 유익을 다룹니다.

혼자보다 둘이 낫고,

세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 않습니다.

Ecclesiastes 1–4 shows

the vanity of life under the sun,

the limits of wisdom and labor,

God who appoints times,

and the weight of human life

in oppression and loneliness.

Chapter 1 says that all is vanity

and that there is nothing new under the sun.

The eye is not satisfied with seeing,

and the ear is not filled with hearing.

Chapter 2 tests pleasure,

achievement,

wealth,

labor,

and wisdom,

but all of them reveal their limits

before death.

Chapter 3 declares

that everything has its season

and every matter under heaven has its time.

Human beings cannot grasp everything,

but God makes everything beautiful in its time.

Chapter 4 deals with the tears of the oppressed,

vain labor,

rivalry,

loneliness,

and the good of companionship.

Two are better than one,

and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
