전도서는 성경의 지혜문학에 속합니다.

Ecclesiastes belongs to the wisdom literature of the Bible.

잠언이 여호와를 경외하는 지혜를

일상의 말과 선택과 길 속에서 가르친다면,

전도서는 해 아래 인생의 헛됨과 한계를 통해

인간을 하나님 앞에 세웁니다.

If Proverbs teaches the wisdom of fearing the LORD

in daily words, choices, and paths,

Ecclesiastes brings humanity before God

through the vanity and limits of life under the sun.

전도서는 단순한 허무주의의 책이 아닙니다.

Ecclesiastes is not a book of simple pessimism.

전도서는

수고,

지혜,

쾌락,

재물,

시간,

죽음,

불의,

권세,

젊음,

노년,

그리고 심판 앞에서

인간이 무엇을 붙들어야 하는지를 묻는 책입니다.

It is a book that asks what human beings should hold on to

before labor,

wisdom,

pleasure,

wealth,

time,

death,

injustice,

power,

youth,

old age,

and final judgment.

그 결론은 분명합니다.

Its conclusion is clear.

하나님을 경외하고

그의 명령을 지키는 것이

사람의 본분입니다.

Fear God

and keep His commandments,

for this is the whole duty of man.

II. 핵심 주제 | Main Theme

전도서의 핵심 단어는

“헛됨”입니다.

The key word of Ecclesiastes is

“vanity.”

그러나 이 헛됨은

인생이 아무 의미 없다는 뜻이 아닙니다.

But this vanity does not mean

that life has no meaning at all.

하나님 없이 해 아래에서 붙잡으려는 모든 것이

손에 잡히지 않고,

영원한 만족이 되지 못한다는 고백입니다.

It means that everything a person tries to grasp under the sun,

apart from God,

cannot be held firmly

and cannot become eternal satisfaction.

사람은 많이 보고,

많이 듣고,

많이 일하고,

많이 쌓고,

많이 즐겨도

죽음과 시간과 한계 앞에서

완전한 답을 얻지 못합니다.

A person may see much,

hear much,

work much,

gain much,

and enjoy much,

yet still cannot find a complete answer

before death,

time,

and human limitation.

그러나 전도서는

인간을 절망에 버려두지 않습니다.

Yet Ecclesiastes does not leave us in despair.

헛됨을 통과하여

하나님 경외로 이끕니다.

It leads us through vanity

to the fear of God.

전도서는 우리에게 묻습니다.

Ecclesiastes asks us:

무엇을 인생의 결론처럼 붙들고 있는가?

What are you holding on to

as if it were the final answer to life?

그리고 대답합니다.

And it answers:

하나님을 경외하고

그분의 명령을 지키라.

Fear God

and keep His commandments.

III. 구조 | Structure

전도서는 크게 이렇게 볼 수 있습니다.

Ecclesiastes may be viewed in this broad structure.

1–2장:

해 아래 모든 것의 헛됨,

지혜와 쾌락과 수고의 한계

Chapters 1–2:

The vanity of all things under the sun,

and the limits of wisdom, pleasure, and labor

3장:

모든 일의 때,

하나님께서 모든 것을 때에 맞게 아름답게 하심

Chapter 3:

A time for everything,

and God making everything beautiful in its time

4장:

억압받는 자의 눈물,

경쟁과 수고의 헛됨,

함께함의 유익

Chapter 4:

The tears of the oppressed,

the vanity of rivalry and labor,

and the benefit of companionship

5–6장:

하나님 앞에서의 말과 서원,

재물의 한계,

소유하지만 누리지 못하는 삶의 헛됨

Chapters 5–6:

Words and vows before God,

the limits of wealth,

and the vanity of possessing without enjoying

7–8장:

죽음 앞에서 배우는 지혜,

겸손과 인내,

권세와 악인의 형통,

하나님의 일을 다 알 수 없는 인간의 한계

Chapters 7–8:

Wisdom learned before death,

humility and patience,

power and the prosperity of the wicked,

and the human limit of understanding God’s work

9–10장:

모든 사람에게 임하는 죽음,

오늘 맡겨진 일을 힘써 행함,

작은 어리석음의 위험

Chapters 9–10:

Death that comes to all,

doing the work given today with strength,

and the danger of a little folly

11장:

미래를 다 알 수 없어도 씨를 뿌리고 선을 행함

Chapter 11:

Sowing seed and doing good

even when the future is unknown

12장:

창조주를 기억함,

인생의 쇠함,

하나님 경외와 명령 순종이라는 결론

Chapter 12:

Remembering the Creator,

the fading of human life,

and the conclusion of fearing God

and obeying His commandments

IV. 신학적 의미 | Theological Meaning

전도서는 인간의 한계를 정직하게 드러냅니다.

Ecclesiastes honestly reveals human limitation.

인간은 지혜로 모든 것을 설명할 수 없습니다.

Human beings cannot explain everything by wisdom.

수고로 영원을 소유할 수 없습니다.

They cannot possess eternity through labor.

재물로 마음을 만족시킬 수 없습니다.

They cannot satisfy the heart with wealth.

쾌락으로 안식을 얻을 수 없습니다.

They cannot gain true rest through pleasure.

미래를 완전히 통제할 수 없습니다.

They cannot fully control the future.

죽음을 피할 수 없습니다.

They cannot escape death.

그러나 이 한계는

인간을 파괴하기 위한 것이 아닙니다.

But this limitation is not given to destroy humanity.

인간을 창조주 앞에 세우기 위한 것입니다.

It is given to bring humanity before the Creator.

전도서는

하나님 없는 삶의 헛됨을 보여 주면서,

하나님 앞에서 삶을 다시 받게 합니다.

Ecclesiastes shows the vanity of life without God,

and then teaches us to receive life again before God.

시간은 내 것이 아닙니다.

Time is not mine.

수고의 결과도 내 것이 아닙니다.

The fruit of labor is not finally mine.

생명도 내 것이 아닙니다.

Life itself is not mine.

모든 것은 하나님 앞에 있습니다.

Everything stands before God.

그러므로 지혜는

모든 것을 소유하는 데 있지 않고,

모든 것을 하나님 앞에서 바르게 받는 데 있습니다.

Therefore wisdom is not found in possessing everything,

but in receiving everything rightly before God.

V. 오늘의 적용 | Application Today

전도서를 읽을 때 우리는 스스로에게 물어야 합니다.

When we read Ecclesiastes,

we must ask ourselves:

나는 무엇으로 만족하려 하는가?

What am I trying to find satisfaction in?

나는 무엇을 인생의 결론처럼 붙들고 있는가?

What am I holding on to

as if it were the conclusion of life?

수고가 나의 우상이 되었는가?

Has labor become my idol?

재물이 나의 안전이 되었는가?

Has wealth become my security?

쾌락이 나의 피난처가 되었는가?

Has pleasure become my refuge?

미래를 알 수 없다는 이유로

오늘의 책임을 피하고 있지는 않은가?

Am I avoiding today’s responsibility

because I cannot know the future?

죽음을 기억하면서도

오늘의 삶을 성실히 받고 있는가?

Am I receiving today’s life faithfully

while remembering death?

전도서는 우리에게

모든 것을 다 설명하라고 말하지 않습니다.

Ecclesiastes does not command us

to explain everything.

전도서는 우리에게

하나님을 경외하라고 말합니다.

It calls us to fear God.

오늘 맡겨진 일을 성실히 행하고,

하나님이 주신 것을 감사로 받으며,

알 수 없는 미래와 결과를

하나님께 맡기라고 말합니다.

It tells us to do faithfully

the work given today,

to receive what God gives with gratitude,

and to entrust the unknown future and results to Him.

VI. 핵심 선언 | Core Declaration

전도서는 우리에게 말합니다.

Ecclesiastes declares:

해 아래 인생은 헛됨을 피할 수 없지만,

하나님 앞에서 인생은 다시 질서를 찾습니다.

Life under the sun cannot escape vanity,

but life before God finds its order again.

사람은 모든 일을 다 알 수 없지만,

하나님을 경외할 수 있습니다.

A person cannot know every work,

but a person can fear God.

사람은 모든 것을 붙들 수 없지만,

하나님께 맡길 수 있습니다.

A person cannot hold on to everything,

but a person can entrust everything to God.

사람은 죽음을 피할 수 없지만,

창조주를 기억하며 오늘의 삶을 받을 수 있습니다.

A person cannot escape death,

but a person can remember the Creator

and receive today’s life.

전도서의 결론은

절망이 아니라 경외입니다.

The conclusion of Ecclesiastes

is not despair,

but reverence.

하나님을 경외하고

그분의 명령을 지키는 것이

사람의 본분입니다.

Fear God

and keep His commandments,

for this is the whole duty of man.

VII. 마지막 권면 | Final Counsel

전도서를 읽으며

헛됨 앞에서 도망하지 마십시오.

As you read Ecclesiastes,

do not run away from vanity.

죽음을 기억하되

삶을 포기하지 마십시오.

Remember death,

but do not give up life.

미래를 다 알 수 없어도

씨를 뿌리십시오.

Even when you cannot know the future,

sow the seed.

많은 말보다

하나님 앞에서 듣는 마음을 구하십시오.

Seek a heart that listens before God

more than many words.

많은 소유보다

하나님 안의 만족을 구하십시오.

Seek satisfaction in God

more than many possessions.

오늘 창조주를 기억하십시오.

Remember your Creator today.

하나님을 경외하고

그분의 명령 안에서

오늘의 순종을 행하십시오.

Fear God,

walk in His commandments,

and practice today’s obedience before Him.
